Frequently Asked Questions About
Teletherapy

What is Teletherapy?
Teletherapy is a form of secure audio-visual conferencing that allows you to receive mental health services from the privacy of your own home. We do exactly the same thing that we would if we were sitting in my office together, we simply see each other and speak through the computer screen. Use of teletherapy requires that you have reliable high speed internet and electronic devices with a camera and speaker (i.e. computer, laptop, cell phone).

Is Teletherapy effective?
Yes! Considerable research has been done to answer this question, and the results suggest that teletherapy services consistently show a benefit to patients, and overall show the same effectiveness as traditional face-to-face therapy. My own personal experience providing both in-person and tele therapy has confirmed these findings, and I have found that both avenues of therapy are equally effective. Further, teletherapy has the added benefit of removing a number of the barriers to receiving services (i.e. more time away from work, commuting to therapy, etc.).

What are the logistics of Teletherapy?
I use the Teletherapy platform SimplePractice. Following our phone consultation, if we decide to proceed with therapy, you will receive instructions for logging on to the SimplePractice Video platform. For your therapy appointment, you log in to my "Virtual Waiting Room," where I will be able to allow you to enter our video session at the time of your appointment.

How can I prepare for Teletherapy?
To prepare for teletherapy, you can download the video platform and test the speed of your internet connection. You may also consider the location where you want to participate in therapy, to ensure privacy and prevent against interruptions/distractions.
